Tuning forks: FAQs

Weighted or unweighted – what's the difference?

Weighted forks have weights on the prongs, giving a slow, deep vibration you can feel when the stem rests on the body. Unweighted forks ring with a clear, longer tone that you hear, held near the ears. Read more in Weighted or Unweighted Tuning Forks?

Which tuning fork set is best for a beginner?

A single 128 Hz Otto weighted fork or the 3-fork 128, 256 & 512 Hz set is an easy start. For a full range, choose the Solfeggio set of 9 (174–963 Hz) or the 7 chakra set.

What does Hz mean on a tuning fork?

Hz (hertz) is how many times the prongs vibrate per second. Lower numbers give deeper tones; higher numbers give brighter, higher tones.

What is a tuning fork activator?

A rubber puck you tap the fork on to start the vibration – an alternative to the mallet, handy when your other hand is busy.

Do your forks come with a mallet and case?

Most do. Singles usually include a mallet and pouch, and sets come with a pouch, zipped case or gift box. Each product page lists exactly what's included.

Weighted or unweighted?

Weighted forks have discs on the prongs, giving a slower, stronger vibration that is felt through the body – ideal for placing on the body during sound therapy. Unweighted forks give a clearer, brighter tone that is heard rather than felt – ideal for listening near the ears and for sound baths. Read our guide: Weighted or Unweighted Tuning Forks?

Grip, pouch, box and activator options

Many of our forks come in versions with a comfortable grip handle, a leather pouch or a storage box, and most include a mallet. Choose the activator option on any listing to add a tuning fork activator, an easy and consistent way to start the vibration.
