A traditional wooden Pinard stethoscope (fetoscope) for listening to the fetal heartbeat during pregnancy. It is a simple hollow horn, about 6" long, that works like an ear trumpet to carry the sound to the listener.
The wide end is placed gently on the mother's abdomen and the midwife or clinician listens through the other end. Because the horn has to be placed close to the baby's heart, it is also useful, alongside palpation, for assessing the baby's position. It needs no batteries or power, which makes it a valued tool in midwifery and in training.
