Buying guides: Nylon or Steel? Choosing a Jewellery Hammer
A chasing hammer has a wide flat or domed face for flattening, planishing and hardening wire and sheet, and a ball end for riveting and texturing. It is usually the first hammer a jeweller buys.
A 32mm face covers more metal and suits bangles, sheet and larger pieces. A 22mm face gives more control on rings, earrings and fine detail.
A texturing hammer adds patterns such as dimples, stripes or crosshatch in a few strikes. Interchangeable-face hammers give you many patterns in one tool.
Use a brass hammer to strike metal stamps, dapping punches and disc cutters. Use a nylon hammer to shape and straighten metal without marking the surface.
A small steel anvil gives you a hard surface to flatten, rivet and form on, and its horns help shape curves and rings.
UK delivery is free and orders are dispatched within 1 working day. Trade and wholesale orders are welcome.
Use nylon when you want to shape metal without changing the surface, such as rounding a ring on a mandrel. Use steel when you want to spread metal or add texture. Read our guide Nylon or Steel? Choosing the Right Jewellery Hammer.
Keep steel faces clean and polished, as any scratch on the hammer is transferred to your work. Keep jewellery hammers for jewellery only.
