Jewellery pliers: FAQs

Which pliers do I need to start jewellery making?

Most makers start with three pliers and a cutter: round nose for loops, chain nose for opening jump rings, flat nose for gripping and bending, plus side cutters for trimming wire. Our plier sets include these in one order.

What is the difference between chain nose and flat nose pliers?

Chain nose pliers taper to a fine point for tight spaces and small findings. Flat nose pliers have wide, flat jaws that grip more surface for sharp, neat bends.

Side cutters or end cutters?

Side cutters cut along the side of the jaw and are best for trimming wire close to your work. End cutters cut at the tip, which helps when cutting flush against a surface.

Why choose nylon or brass jaw pliers?

Nylon and brass jaws are softer than steel, so they hold silver, gold, copper and plated wire without leaving marks. Nylon jaws are also good for straightening wire.

What are parallel action pliers?

Their jaws stay parallel as they close, so they grip evenly along the whole jaw. See our parallel action pliers range.

How quickly will my order arrive?

Which pliers do you need?

  • Round nose pliers – tapered round jaws for making loops, curves and jump rings.
  • Chain nose pliers – fine tapered jaws for gripping, opening and closing jump rings and working in tight spaces.
  • Flat nose pliers – wide flat jaws for gripping wire, making sharp bends and holding flat stock.
  • Bent nose pliers – angled tips that reach into awkward spots and keep your hand clear of the work.
  • Side cutters – cut wire, headpins and beading wire close to the work.
  • End cutters – cut wire flush at the tip for a neat finish.

Smooth jaws or serrated?

Smooth jaws grip without marking soft metals like silver, copper and gold-filled wire, so they are the best choice for most jewellery work. Serrated jaws grip harder but leave marks, so keep them for jobs where the finish doesn't matter. Nylon and brass jaws are the gentlest of all.
