What you need to melt metal

  • Ceramic crucibles and melting dishes – hold the metal while it melts, with a spout for pouring.
  • Whip tong handles – spring wire handles that grip the crucible so you can tip and pour safely.
  • Flask tongs – long tongs for lifting hot casting flasks.
  • Pickling tongs – brass or copper tongs for lifting work out of pickle without contaminating it.
  • Burners and torches – spirit lamps and micro torches for soldering and small melts.

Our Melting & Casting Starter Kit includes the crucible, whip handle, flask tongs and pickling tongs in one order.

How to choose a crucible size

  • 2" crucible – small melts, ideal for beginners and repairs.
  • 3" crucible – the most popular size for everyday ingots and small castings.
  • 4" crucible – larger melts, up to about 155 g.

Always match the whip handle or tongs to your crucible size so the dish is held securely while you pour.

Before your first melt

Heat a new crucible gently first, then glaze the inside with borax to help the metal flow and extend the life of the dish. Keep one crucible for each metal to avoid contamination. Read our beginner's kit list for melting silver.

Safety

Always wear eye protection and heat-resistant gloves, work on a fireproof surface in a well-ventilated area, and never pour molten metal onto damp surfaces.
